Since 1958, the Metro St. Louis InterCity Fellowship has promoted, on a
monthly basis, Rotary fellowship among clubs within a reasonable driving
distance.
The larger clubs help the smaller ones by swelling attendance/audiences in order
to enable topnotch programs. Rotarians from member clubs have the
opportunity to visit Host Clubs and discover old/new friends and check out
"makeup" locations.
For as long as many can remember, this event had been the charge of the late
David Essen and it is in his memory that the InterCity Committee is
restructuring and offers ever greater experiences for its member clubs.
Membership in Intercity is NOT automatic. Those clubs who retain
membership do so with ever increasing interest in the promotion of Rotary and
Rotary Ideals through fellowship with other clubs and Rotarians. While any
club in the Metro St. Louis area can ask to be a member of the InterCity Group,
only those clubs who continue to send its members on a monthly basis, retain
their membership.
Each month, the I/C group provides signup sheets which are used to give
attendance prizes. The attendance sheets also act as the group "makeup" card for
attendance at the visitor club level.
The District does NOT fund InterCity. Each Host Club contributes Notice
Prep and mailing costs. Fines and other contributions help to defray badge
and materials costs. Donations to our famous WORLD BANK help to support
our Rotary Foundation in various forms. Paul Harris Sustaining Member donations
are made occasionally in the name of someone attending. Various other
attendance prizes are awarded from time to time. Fines are assessed for a
variety of "wrongs" from no Rotary pins being worn
to a whole lot of other fun things…one person was fined for not wearing
green…another for having his/her name in the paper…fines are limited to
coins up to a dollar and are all for a good cause.
InterCity Committee also provides the means necessary for each club to RSVP its
expected attendance for any upcoming IC meeting and provides dynamic speakers to
each host club for the event. It also, with advice and counsel of the host
club, sets the price for the day.
The purpose of IC meetings is fun and fellowship of Rotarians from local clubs
throughout the area. Lunch meetings usually begin at noon and end by 1:30
p.m., including speaker time and award time. Meetings are on the regular
time and day of the Host Club, usually at the SAME PRICE the host club normally
charges for its regular meetings.
