MG 17293 - Las Gamas Women's Dairy Cooperative |
|
A few years ago some women in the village of Las Gamas, Bolivia decided they needed to do something about the conditions in their village. The children were poorly fed, the average annual income was about $300 per family, and most of the men of the family had to work away from home just to make a meager income. They decided to buy some dairy cows and produce milk, not only for
their families but for a source of income. They pooled their funds
and purchased some pasture ground (on credit) and contacted Heifer
International to help them obtain some cows.

One of the worst droughts in years hit their area. The Rotary Club of Arnold, Missouri helped them build a water well to provide water for the cows, but their pastures remained in poor condition. |
|
The women were approached by an agency offering to buy approximately 2,000 small cups of yogurt a week for area schools. At this point, the Rotary Club of Arnold, Missouri teamed up with the Rotary Club of Santa Cruz de la Sierra - Las Palmas to apply for a grant to supply more water wells, more cows. |

The project is underway. Yogurt is being produced, but there is still more equipment to be purchased and installed. |
