Water Well Project

At first glance, it might seem odd that a water well project would be considered a Poverty Alleviation project.  But in many regions of the world, one person from each family must spend their entire day walking to get a jug of water for their families daily use.

Sadly, this water often comes from a pond where animals are drinking and also contaminating the water, leading to many cases of cholera, dysentery, and other diseases, and often higher rates of death among the children and infants.

This project will fund the drilling of 42 tube wells and the hand pump necessary to obtain the water from these wells.

Each well will supply the needs of approximately 100 families, roughly 500 people.

So, this project will be impacting about 4200 families, as many as 20,000 people.

Having a water well nearby will allow the water gatherer of the family to enter the workforce.  The families may be subsisting on an income of US $1.00 a day from one wage earner.  This project will allow one more family member to work, raising the family income and improving their condition.

Our Rotary Foundation spends US $500 per well.

All of our clubs are expected to work toward earning the Presidential Citation award this year.  One of the requirements is to support a Poverty Alleviation project in another country.

Clubs can fulfill this requirement for their Presidential Citation by sponsoring one of these wells. This is accomplished by donating $500 to the Annual Programs Fund of our Rotary Foundation.  Smaller clubs can also participate by sponsoring half a well with a $250 donation to the Annual Programs Fund. A check payable to "Rotary Foundation" should be mailed to District Foundation chairman Todd Lindley with a note that this donation is to sponsor a water well.

These donations will count toward the club's goal for Annual Programs giving and also toward the goal of $100 per member to the Annual Programs Fund.

A certificate will be prepared and presented to the club, recognizing their efforts in participation in this Poverty Alleviation project.

Project Status: APPROVED and FUNDED.
