Matching Grant # 53272
Rotary Clubs of Clayton-Ladue, Missouri, USA and
Francisco Beltrao-Marrecas, Parana, Brazil

This project was developed between the Rotary Club of Francisco Beltrao-Marrecas, Brazil and Rotary District 6060, with the Rotary Club of Clayton-Ladue agreeing to manage the project internationally. The Matching Grant is a little bit unusual in that there are three separate items being funded, all in the same region of Francisco Beltrao. They are:

  1. Exercise equipment for a fitness trail in a city park.

  2. Teaching English to blind youth in a certified vocational program, so that they will become licensed to teach English to others.

  3. Buy books and supplies for a "Parents As Teachers" program for parents of children of the Creche Day Care Center.

Park Project:

A set of exercise stations were installed along a fitness trail in a city park of Francisco Beltrao.

To the right is a picture of the park before the fitness trail is built.

Dr. Marcos and his wife, Dr. Celma Gregorio are testing the new equipment in December 2004. Dr. Gregorio is one of our project contacts working with our Rotarians in implementing this project.

Parents as Teachers program:

Rotarians visit Creche Zelir Vettorello at a party celebrating this project. Materials, video tapes, and other supplies were purchased to help teach parents about the importance of their role in raising their children, including the importance of literacy, and behavioral development, beginning at birth. The emphasis is especially in teaching the children at home before they are old enough for school and then at school-age, augmenting the school's instruction with parental involvement.

Teaching English to Blind Youth:

This program will teach English to four blind youth through an intensive training program. The youth being selected have been abandoned by their family and are approximately 16 years old.

By the time they complete their training, the youth will qualified to teach English to others. Rotarians from Francisco Beltrao-Marrecas will assist these youth in finding employment at that time.
