Our primary contact in Pakistan has been M. Usman Khan, a past-president of the Rotary Club of Hayatabad, Peshawar. Rotarian Usman reported to us that half of the grant proceeds were allocated to the Al-Basarat Foundation for cataract surgeries. Also the Al-Khidmat Foundation played an important role in the completion of the project. Rotarian Zamarud Shah also assisted in the oversight of this project.Usman reports that 1,000 cataract surgeries have been completed. Also 1,200 were given near vision glasses. A total of 2,000 patients were provided with eye medicines, such as antibiotics, vitamins, anti-allergy medicines, etc. for a variety of problems. Much of the work has been done along the Pak-Afghan border in Afghan Refugee camps. |
