 Matching Grant #50830
Cataract Surgery Project
Rotary Club of Gulbarga, India - District 3160

District 6060 is partnering with D6710 in Western Kentucky, D6040 in Northwestern Missouri, D2110 in Italy, D7570 in Tennessee and Virginia, and D6510 in Southern Illinois as international sponsors of this project.

Our project partner is the RC of Gulbarga North  in India, D3160.

This is the third year we have partnered with a club in D3160 on Matching Grant projects to fund eye surgeries. This year's project brings our total of eye surgeries in D3160 to 3,500.

At left is a picture of Gulbarga North Rotarian ophthalmologist  Dr. Gautam Jahagirdar examining a patient at an eye camp sponsored by their club.

Past District Governor Dr. Umesh Megur (R.) is pictured with 3 patients about to receive their eyesight back.
Dr. Megur: "The lady with a different dress standing next to me is a tribal lady blind in both eyes. She is hardly 4 feet 6 inches tall, very imacaited and helpless. She is a widow with no children to support her and has remained blind for the last one year. Thanks to Rotary Foundation MG 50830 she is able to see and is able to lead her independent life."
"The couple next to her (L.) were also blind. Their children were reluctant to spend money for their parents. They came to my office for consultation and when I advised they needed surgery, they started crying stating that they have no money and their children will not help them. I asked them to come to a Rotary eye camp under MG 50830 and now they are not only able to see, but are also in a position to do some light work and earn their food."

This 8 year old boy had a perforating injury of his right eye. A cataract developed and he became blind in that eye.

His parents were very poor and couldn't afford any care, so Dr. Megur performed surgery with the help of MG 50830, under the condition that the parents would begin taking the boy to school.

This is the day after surgery. The boy as regained 80% of his vision in the right eye.

We will hope for more improvement.

A representative of one of our international partner districts, Rotarian Nataio Salvatore Abbruscato of Rotary District 2110 in Italy recently visited Dr. Megur and was able to visit an eye camp in Bidar receiving funding from MG 50830.
