Matching Grant #18954 Paper Recycling - Sheltered Workshop Project Rotary Club of Sao Bento do Sul-Cidade dos Moveis, Brazil, D4650 |
Several Rotarians from District 6060 took part in a Friendship Exchange with District 4650, Brazil, in the fall of 2000. While traveling and being hosted in Brazil they visited with Rotarians of several clubs and brought back ideas for Matching Grants with three clubs.
The Rotary Club of Sao Bento planned a project to purchase some paper recycling equipment for a handicapped training facility. The participants are mentally or physically handicapped, or both. |
Our friend, Geraldo of the RC of Sao Bento do Sul and the director of the institution. In Geraldo's hand is one sample of the finished recycled paper product, decorated by the kids at the school. |

The shredded paper is cut into smaller pieces and sorted by dominant color. |
This machine uses the cut paper to make a slurry, which is then used to make the new paper products. |

The slurry is spread and processed on a screen to allow for drying. |
| This is the recycled product midway through the process. It will be formed into gift boxes, greeting cards, and bookmarks and hand-decorated by the students. |
Several examples of the finished products produced by the paper recycling process. |
| More examples of the beautiful greeting cards produced by the students at the center. |
The students also recycle newspaper into tubes of recycled paper which are then woven into baskets which are painted or lacquered to be sold. |
